With reference to previous correspondence on the subject of the Opium negotiations now proceeding at Peking between this country and China, I am directed by Sir E.Grey to trans-
mit herewith to be laid before the Secretary of State for the Colonies a copy of a telegram from His Majesty's Minister at Paking stating that the Wai wu pu propose to sign the Agreement on the 8th instant, and ask that the movement of opium in bond and in stock should be stopped on that day to enable the Custom to do the work of listing.
J
should the Secretary of State see no objection, I am to request that confidential instructions may be telegraphed to the Governor of HongKong, as desired by Sir John Jordan, to the effect that he should take concerted action with the Commisioner of Customs in listing on Monday next the Uncertificated Indian opium in the Colony which is intended for the Chinese market and which, as will be seen from para- graphs 1 and 2 of the accompanying telegram no 104 of April 25 from Sir J.Jordan, must be exported to China within seven days.
1 am,
sir,
Your most obedient,
humble Servant,
e Under-Secretary of State,
